Pool tables can be made from many parts. The table has a multilayered table top, which is then covered with billiard paper. Some people like to have different colors of cloth on their pool tables. This allows for a more personal experience. This also makes sure that the playing surface remains smooth.

The slate is the first component of a pool table. The table's surface is made of slate, a heavy-milled rock. Most pools tables are made out of 3/4" or 1” slate. It is worth checking the size of the table before you buy.

Rails are also an important part the pool table. Rails can be made of either synthetic materials or natural gum. They attach to the slate and provide support for the table. Sometimes, the rail can be made from solid wood. Other materials are usually plywood or fiberboard.

Cushions protect rails from damage and prevent them from becoming damaged. Cushions are made out of either cloth or vulcanized plastic. These cushions can be used interchangeably to complement rails.

The toprail is a shorter rail attached to the top end of the table. Side rails run along the length and width of the pool table. Cross beams can also add strength. A transitionplate is installed between rails and slate. A transition plate is used to strengthen the table.

The table's bottom rail can be found at the foot. Rail apron is horizontal timber that provides support for the rails. Bed shelf is another support. Both of these support are made from solid wooden pieces. Post legs are considered perfect legs.

Corner pockets can be described as holes in the corners. The angle of entry to the corner pockets is 142deg (+/-1deg). The minimum opening width of the corner pocket can be 4-7/8 inches and maximum 5 1/8.

The horizontal line running horizontally across a table is the headstring. The starting point for the head string is generally the second diamond from the side pockets. The player can also draw a line in the cloth to mark where the head string begins.

The foot spot is located at the end of the table. The foot spot determines where the ball is going to land when a shooter tries to break from the ball. It is also the place where the nameplate is located.

Be sure to inspect the slate thickness when you purchase a new pooltable. The slate should be at least 1" thick. Dealers sell tables that are 7/8 inches thick. Though they will cost less, you do not receive the accuracy of a 1" slate.

Another important part of your pool table cloth is the cloth. Modern billiard cloth is often made from a mix of synthetic nylon and natural wool. Billiard felt is also part of the cloth. While some players prefer a different color of cloth, it should be smooth and durable. The cloth should be brushed at least once a month in order to preserve its quality.
