A variety of parts make up pool tables. The multi-layered top of the table is covered in billiard cloth. Some people prefer different colors of cloth to be on their pool tables. This allows for a more customized experience. This also makes sure that the playing surface remains smooth.

The first part of a pool table is the slate. Slate is a heavy milled rock that is used as the surface of the table. The majority of pool tables are made from either 3/4" or 1" slate. It is worth checking the size of the table before you buy.

Rails are another important part of the pool table. Rails are typically made of natural gum or synthetic materials. They attach to the slate and provide support for the table. In some cases, the rail is made of solid wood. Other materials include fibreboard and plywood.

Cushions are used for rail protection and to prevent them from being damaged. Cushions are made out of either cloth or vulcanized plastic. These cushions can be interchangeable with rails.

The toprail is a shorter rail attached to the top end of the table. Side rails, which are shorter, extend along the length the pool table. Cross beams are also added to add more strength. A transition plate between the slate and rails is common. Using a transition plate helps make the table stronger.

The bottom rail is located at the foot of the table. Rail apron is horizontal timber that provides support for the rails. Another support is the bed shelf. Both are made from solid wood. Post legs can be considered perfect legs.

Corner pockets are holes in corners of the table. The angle of entry to the corner pockets is 142deg (+/-1deg). The minimum opening width of the corner pocket can be 4-7/8 inches and maximum 5 1/8.

The horizontal line that runs horizontally across the middle of the table is the head string. The head string begins at the point where the second side pocket diamond is located. However, a player can draw a line on the cloth to mark the start of the head string.

The foot spot is at the end the table. When a shooter breaks from the ball, the foot spot is the place the ball will land. It also houses the nameplate.

Make sure you check the thickness before purchasing a pool table. The slate should be 1" thick. There are many dealers who sell tables made with 7/8 inch slate. They will be less expensive, but you won't get the exact same results as a 1 inch slate.

Your pool table cloth is an important part. Modern billiard cloth is made of a mixture of synthetic nylon and natural sheep wool. Billiard felt can also be part of the cloth. Some players prefer a certain color of cloth. However, it should still be durable and smooth. You should brush the cloth at least once a month to maintain its quality.
